Kieran Hanrahan, RTE Radio 1

“I first heard Cruinniú at a Ceili House recording for RTE Radio in late 2005.
I was immediately impressed with the sheer energy, joy and maturity in their music. All accomplished young musicians, they bring a refreshing sparkle to the music and song in both the way they play and their tune combinations. Clever too the subtle arrangements with each performer given space to impress.
It’s a live recording which draws you in right from the start with a selection of reels bursting with intensity. From there it’s a musical journey that mixes tunes and songs, old and new, with aplomb.
Cruinniú are as comfortable playing The Boys of Bluehill, O’Carolan’s Sí beag Sí mór, Na Ceannabhain Bhana or a set of Kerry polkas. It’s a measure of their musical ability that they move effortlessly from reel to song to jig and more in front of a live audience.
Cruinniú is indeed a great gathering of some of our finest young musicians and singers from various parts of the country who have a common understanding of the tradition.
This recording heralds their arrival, to the fore, on the traditional music scene where, I expect, they’ll be for a long time to come.”

“Ní fás aon oíche an buíon álainn ceoltóirí seo.  Seachtar a bhfuil a gcuid talainne sean-chruthaithe acu ó dhuine go duine mar cheoltóirí den chéad scoth ó bhí siad ina ndéagóirí óga tamall an-ghearr de bhlianta ó shoin.  Cruthúnas eile fós iad ar mar atá teorainní dhá gcur de dhroim seoil ag cumarsáid an lae inniu.  Ag ócáidí móra ar nós na bhfleadhanna agus Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy a chuireadar aithne ar a chéile i dtosach ina ndaltaí an-óg dara leibhéil.  Tá barr curtha ar an gcomrádaíocht a d’fhás go nádúrtha eattorra an uair sin, anois agus iad uile i mbun a dtríú leibhéal oideachais faoi seo ainneoin go bhfuil siad scaipthe i gcoláistí ar fud na tíre!

Is údar bróid ar leith dá muintir agus dúinne a ndílseacht do cheol agus do chaighdeáin máistreachta a seacht sinnsir.  Is bonn breá folláin ar an ngealladh atá faoi’n mbuíon an chéad taifead seo acu.  Agus sé mo ghuidhe-sa go n-éiríonn le Cruinniú blianta maithe fada a chaitheamh ag cruthú agus ag foirfiú shean-cheol agus amhráin na nGael.

This exciting new traditional group, consisting of seven brilliant musicians with the highest pedigree and steeped in the pure tradition, is like a breath of fresh air and is bound to show even greater promise.  Yet at this very early stage with little experience or maturity there are already shades of great tradbands of yesteryear.  Given space and time I feel certain that loads of great and wonderful ventures await Cruinniú as I wish the group and their début album every success in the future.

Go neartaí Dia bhúr gcuid ceoil.”
